Champions League finalists Liverpool welcome the reigning Bundesliga champions to Anfield for the first leg of arguably the most eagerly-anticipated tie of the first knockout phase.

While these two sides boast 10 Champions League/European Cup titles between them, they've never met since competition's re-branding in 1992. Which is what makes this tie extra special. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is no stranger to German opposition, having won the Bundesliga twice during his tenure with Borussia Dortmund. Although his record against Bayern Munich isn’t noteworthy as the German has only come out 8 times in 29 meeting with the Bavarians.

Bayern, a club with more recent experience of understanding what it takes to get across the line have the edge with the Reds missing 3 key defenders.

Bayern’s ace Lewandoski has credited the Reds boss saying "He released that striker's instinct in me" sighting the contribution Klopp made to his career during four seasons at Borussia Dortmund. Lewandoski currently leads the way as the top scorer in this season's Champions League with eight goals and would be looking to up his tally with Fabinho and Matip in central defense for Liverpool.

Liverpool's front three are expected to run riot against the Bavarians defense, where veteran Mats Hummels and Niklas Sule would be tasked to keep the hosts quiet. If the centre-backs can’t track the movement of the Salah-Mane-Firmino trio, Kovac’s men could be in for a long night.

Klopp claimed in his pre-match press conference that he would have bought tickets himself to watch the game if he had not been involved. While he may not admit it just now, the trio Bayern use to dictate tempo across the centre of the pitch — Leon Goretzka, James Rodriguez, Thiago Alcantara — are surely three players he would happily pay to see.
