La Liga Mesi and Ramos

La Liga returns this week, so here's our football expert Tomiwa's guide to every team, why Barcelona are title favorites, who qualifies for European football, and much more

Barcelona
Luis Suarez's comeback makes Barcelona y favorites again for the title. Despite not having an excellent season, Barça are the most adept team in La Liga. If we are talking about winning games for the rest of the season, Lionel Messi will be crucial.

Real Madrid
Moving their matches to the Valdebebas training complex could potentially upset Real Madrid's chances. Without the fans, the gap between Bernabéu and Valdebebas is a lot, and the feeling won't be the same. It would feel like a neutral ground where Away teams could be more comfortable without Bernabeu's pressure. Before the break, Real Madrid had only one win in their previous five games. They won El Clásico but lost to Levante and Betis, and played a draw against Celta Vigo.

Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio are now fully fit and could be decisive for head coach Zinedine Zidane. Although Real Madrid could still win the title, they are not the favorites.

Sevilla
Julen Lopetegui has had a fantastic pilot season at Seville. His team is excellent at keeping possession and know when to be more direct. Their last defeat was against Celta Vigo with a comeback in the final minutes of the game. I honestly don't think that they are going to clinch a Champions League place.

Real Sociedad
Before the break, Real Sociedad was in great shape, with a great attacking squad. Martin Odegaard is indeed not on his best form, compared with his form from the beginning of the season, but Mikel Merino and Isak are both in sensational form.  Securing a Champions League spot might be tough, knowing that they would have to face Real Madrid, Sevilla, Getafe, and Atletico Madrid.

Getafe
With Senor Bordalás as their manager, we cannot rule out Getafe qualifying for the Champions League. They have fewer options than other teams, but they have a favorable fixture list: the games ahead are against Granada, Espanyol, Eibar, and Valladolid - all of whom they could beat. I think Getafe will be going for a Champions League place until the final day of La Liga.

Atletico Madrid
Los Rojiblancos could be one of the teams with challenges playing their games without fans. They're one of the best home teams in the league, and there is a strong connection between their players and fans. However, they are a mentally strong squad, and Diego Simeone's tactics would be critical for them.

The return of Diego Costa and Joao Felix and will also give them a boost. I think they will be one of the top four teams in La Liga and make next season's Champions League.

Valencia
Despite winning against Betis after a series of bad results, I think it is tough to see Valencia making next season's Champions League. The tie away to Real Madrid could be a crucial game.

Villarreal
I think Villarreal are going to strive until the final day for a place in the Europa League. With the season's suspension, I am sure the players have gotten over their poor form, and they have Cazorla, Moreno, Bacca, andAlcácer to help them. They are an attacking team that knows how to defend. They will be a club to keep an eye on till the last day of the competition.

Granada
Granada still has a chance to clinch a European place. They are a strong team, but we need to see the squad's motivation. I won't be surprised if Granada finishes in a mid-table position.

Athletic Bilbao
They are more focused on winning the Copa del Rey final than playing La Liga, which could be a crucial factor if we talk about motivation. They are unpredictable, and with top players like Iñaki Williams and Raul Garcia (nine goals), they can sometimes struggle to win games. There is no huge gap between them and a European place, but their focus is on the cup.

Osasuna
Chimmy Avila's return could be the key to Osasuna's motivation. They have a great atmosphere during home games, so we'll wait to see how they get on without the fans. They're as close to the European spots as they are to the drop zone, so they need to secure multiple wins to keep their top-flight status

Betis
Betis are the greatest disappointment of the season if we consider the strength of their squad. With Borja, Canales, Carvalho, and Fekir, they have a strong team, but they don't team up well together in La Liga. The El Gran Derbi will be the key: if Betis can win against their local rivals, they might have a chance to clinch a European place, although it won't be easy.

Levante
They have a good gap from the relegation zone with 33 points, but they need to focus on improving their defense. They suffer a lot in defense, and it is tough to see Levante ever keeping a clean sheet, even though they have one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga.

Alaves
They have an excellent record in 2020, suffering just two defeats. They always make it difficult for opposing teams and have no problem waiting until the last minute to create a scoring chance. It could be an excellent strategy to play and secure another year in La Liga with no fans.

La Liga

Valladolid
Manager, Sergio González has done a great job this season. However, it was tough for them in both defeats against the Basque teams. The game against Leganés is vital: if they don't take a point, it could be the end of Valladolid's survival chances.

Eibar
They are a team that loves to take risks. At the beginning of the season, they produced lots of ball recoveries, but now they have a lot form. Eibar lost against Real Sociedad and Valencia and, and now, they have a strict fixture list: away against Real Madrid, and a Basque derby against Athletic. They would struggle. I think they would be relegated.

Celta Vigo
I think they are going to stay in the top-flight. In fact, before the break, Celta didn't lose in five games. Their big problem is scoring goals (22 so far). But I think the talent of Santi Mina, Aspas, Smolov, and Rafinha will be enough to keep them in La Liga.

Mallorca
Vicente Moreno had done a great because much of his squad is made up of players who were with the club before they gained promotion. Beating Eibar was massive for the team to sustain their motivation. They were getting some exciting results, a 3-3 draw against Betis, for example, but with their squad, it is tough to see them surviving another year in this division. I also think Mallorca will get relegated.

La Liga

Leganes
Javier Aguirre is the man with nerves of steel. Their victory against Villarreal was vital because, before that game, Leganes were having a tough time. Those three points and the break could help the manager motivate his players. I see Leganes winning a lot of games and sending Eibar or Valladolid to the Second Division.

Espanyol
They are six points from safety and bottom of the log- a massive gap with only 11 games left. Abelardo Fernandez can muster up a miracle, as he did at Alaves. Nonetheless, Espanyol struggle when they need to clinch a win. They face direct rivals; Alaves, Levante, Leganés and Eibar, and have tough fixtures against Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Barcelona, and Valencia. It is tough to see Espanyol staying up.
