Asian Handicap: A Concise Explainer

Asian Handicap: A Concise Explainer

There are several betting markets and events that players can place their bet on and while some of them are very straightforward like a Home Win, or an Away Win, or Both teams to score, commonly known as GG, many other markets prove a bit difficult for players to understand, especially those new to punting. One of these markets is the Asian Handicap. The Asian Handicap is a betting market that aims to eliminate the outcome of a draw and they are expressed in a range from one-quarter goal to several goals. The Asian Handicap also gives a chance for players to recover some part of their money if their desired outcome does not come through.

Also, handicaps give a virtual advantage to one of the competing teams that is deemed weaker. A form of this in Nigerian parlance is called ‘one goal ahead’ or ‘two goals ahead’ depending on the level of disparity in strength between both teams.

Imagine for instance that you were playing a PlayStation game of football with your younger brother who is 8 years younger, and a rookie at playing video games, to make the game more competitive, you may graciously give him ‘two goals ahead’. At the start of the game, your younger brother has a 2-goal lead against you. If the game ends 3-0 in your favor, the game’s score is 3-2 because of the 2 goal lead you gave your brother. If you score 2 goals, the game ends in a draw. If the score ends 1-1, he won the game 3-1 because of his 2-goal virtual lead.

With Asian Handicap, it works a little differently, but the principle remains the same. Do not forget the principle is that it gives an advantage to the underdog, the weaker team.

There are three type of Asian Handicaps, the round numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, etc.), the half numbers (0.5, 1.5, 2.5 etc.), and the quarter numbers (1.25, 1.75, 2.25 etc.).

Asian Handicap

Predict the outcome of a match after the handicap has been applied to the match result. The handicap value is shown in brackets. Asian handicaps eliminate the chance of a draw, with two possible outcomes - Home team win (1H) or Away team win (2H). Handicaps can be whole goal (handicap is a whole number), half goal (handicap ends in 0.5) or quarter goal (handicap ends in .25 or .75). For whole goal handicaps, if the result is a draw after the handicap has been applied all bets will be void and the stakes refunded. For quarter goal handicaps, half the stake is settled a quarter goal below the handicap, and half the stake settled a quarter goal above the handicap. For example, a bet on 1H (1.25:0) would be half stake at (1:0) and half stake at (1.5:0).

HT Handicap
Predict the first half outcome of a match after the indicated handicap score has been applied to the half time result . For example, handicap score (0:2) indicates that the away team was given two goals advantage, handicap score (0.5:0) indicates that home team was given 0.5 goals advantage, etc. Asian handicap is two-way handicap, meaning that there are only 2 possible outcomes - win of the home team (1H) or win of the away team (2H). In the case of a whole goal handicap (value in brackets ends with ''1" or "4''), if the result is level after the handicap is taken into consideration, then all bets are void and stake refunded. By placing bet on value in brackets that represents quarter of one or more goals (value in brackets ends with ''0.5'' or ''1.5''), the bet can be half won (half of the stake multiplied by the odds is won) or half lost (half of the stake will be refunded).

2HT Handicap
Predict the 2nd half time outcome of a match after the indicated handicap score has been applied to the result .
